Finally closing in on a final product. I’m rendering 2 versions, one with and one without volumes. Currently waiting on the one with volumes to render. I wanted to add an atmosphere and some body to the inner ring. I didn’t think I was getting a good return on using object scattering for the inner ring so I just did a noise pattern on a ring. Then I thought it didn’t look like it had enough body so I wanted to put a volume in it. I was doing volume tests so that I could take a simple volume shape then use animated noises to make a moving high detail volume. I got it working but at the scale I was at the ring being high detail added a whopping 16 minutes per frame to the render time so I just went with a solid ring volume with my old noise ring mesh inside to add some movement. I’d like to spend time optimizing it, but I’ve spent too much time on this already, but I was refreshing a lot of forgotten knowledge.

Once they’re done I’m planning on sending my finished renders to both Bruce Pennington, the original artist, as well as Blood Incantation and their label in the hopes that they’ll be interested in working with me. Wish me luck.

Here’s some test stills of the detailed and solid volume on the ring:
